Welcoming Diversity at Unschooling Conferences

Eli Gerzon writes about welcoming diversity at unschooling conference and into the unschooling scene as a whole. Examples are given of seeming racism against African-American unschoolers was shown at the Northeast Unschooling Conference in Massachusetts, in 2008 and at the Rethinking Education Conference in Texas in 2008. Unschooling advocate Erika Davis-Pitre, an African-American unschooling advocate’s session on diversity is referred to. There is a need to put special attention and effort on trusting and welcoming diversity, people who appear different that will have the same sort of amazing results as trusting has had in other areas of unschooling.

Homeschooling, Unschooling, and Diversity

Eli Gerzon addresses how homeschooling, unschooling, and worldschooling, with the freedom, trust, and empowerment they grant has been proven to “improve academic performance and reduce impact of socio-economic factors”. The recent incident of racial profiling against African American Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is referenced in relation to the continued presence of racism. Still, there is a lack of diversity at homeschooling and unschooling gatherings despite the growing numbers of diverse people homeschooling.
